BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

Since the formation of WGCADA in 1979, we have recognised the importance of volunteers and the valuable role they play in our service delivery. WGCADA continues to attract volunteers from all sections of the community with a wish to help those whose lives have been affected by substance misuse to make positive changes.

Those who wish to become a volunteer with WGCADA would need to follow the volunteer selection policy outlined below:

  • Apply for a Volunteer Application Form by sending a letter to our Head Office, 41/42 St James Crescent, Uplands, Swansea, SA1 6DR, expressing their interest in becoming a WGCADA volunteer. An application form will then be sent out and once completed should be returned to the Head Office.
  • On receipt of the application form, a Manager/Senior will contact the potential volunteer to arrange an informal interview to assess the person's suitability to volunteer.
  • Unsuccessful applicants will be informed by letter and where appropriate reasons will be given in accordance with WGCADA's volunteer policy. If appropriate, advice would be given on where to access alternative opportunities.
  • Successful applicants will be written to by the appropriate Manager/Senior and invited to attend the volunteer training programme. The person will be asked to provide two character references and will also be subject to an enhanced CRB check.

The following topics are covered on the Volunteer Training Courses:

  • Introduction and Confidentiality
  • Ethics
  • Harm Reduction Model
  • Drug Awareness
  • Alcohol Awareness
  • Minnesota Model
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Managing Conflict and Lone Working
  • Telephone Counseling

Volunteers in recovery need at least three years continous abstinence.

Volunteers will be asked to provide references.

Volunteers will be subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Being accepted as a Volunteer for WGCADA is in no way indication of our intention of offering future paid employment.

Volunteers will be required to attend training and reach a required standard prior to their commencement as Volunteers.

Volunteers will have to read, understand and abide by WGCADA's policies and procedures.

Volunteers must read, understand and agree to abide by WGCADA's confidentiality policy. Any breach of confidentiality will be viewed as a serious matter.

The ongoing training and development of Volunteers is a high priority to WGCADA.

Personal information recorded about Volunteers is stored and maintained with appropriate safeguards for confidentiality.
