WGCADA has been offering the Primary Treatment Programme for over
20 years. Primary treatment is based on the 12 Step Minnesota Model
of treatment, and requires service users to be abstinent from the
use of all mood-altering chemicals (with the exception of certain
prescribed medications) before the treatment process can be implemented.
Primary Treatment consists of group therapy and one to one counselling
sessions. There would be no more than eight at any one time in the
group therapy process and the counselling sessions are given on
a weekly basis, lasting for one hour. Further to this, participation
at Self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous
is required if service users want to become part of this treatment
process.
We actively cover the first five steps of the Twelve Step programme
in Primary care, and the duration of this can vary depending on
an individuals needs and understanding of the issues involved. On
average the process takes approximately nine months.
Step one invariably takes the longest time, sometimes as long as
six months. This is the step that encourages service users to look
at the damage caused by their substance mis-use. This is often the
most painful time and issues covered include anger, self worth and
denial. As they progress through the next four steps, changes are
actively seen through the help of their peer group and counsellors.
Issues commonly covered during these steps are shame, spirituality,
pride and others of which there are far too many to mention. We
don't only promote the idea of abstinence at this stage we also
encourage the individual to change patterns of behaviour that have
been prevalent for a long time and need to be altered in order to
lead a more fulfilled and positive life.
