TREATMENT: PRE-TREATMENT GROUP PHASE 2

This is an educational and prevention group.

The second phase goes into the illness in more depth and contains a smaller limited number of clients. To access this group clients need to be abstinent or on a reducing prescribed De-tox regime.

  • This group consists of approximately 8 people, and runs for a period of eight weeks. They are introduced to the Minnesota Model of treatment, starting with the Step 1 pamphlet of the 12-Step programme of the Self-Help Fellowships.
  • Attendance in at least 2 meetings of Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous every week is expected.
  • 1-1 counselling sessions are given once a week for a half-hour session.
  • Participation in the Domino Project is encouraged in order to learn Life Skills, (Cookery, I.T. etc).
  • The clients are encouraged to look at themselves and to share their feelings in the group situation. This is done both verbally and by means of written assignments.
  • Phase 2 is also preparing the clients for introduction into Primary Treatment, which consists of a full day of Group Therapy and a much deeper look into their illness.

Some topics covered in Phase 2 include:

  • A basic look at the first step of the Minnesota Model of recovery.
  • Acceptance and moving forward
  • Barriers to recovery
  • Social and Personal Unmanageability
  • Encouragement towards the Primary Treatment process.
