TREATMENT: PRE-TREATMENT GROUP PHASE 1

This is a purely educational group in which all aspects of alcohol and drug abuse is covered. Also the Self-Help groups like Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous are talked about. This is conducted on a Group basis. It is an 11-week course.

  • There are no more than 15 clients in this group at any given time.
  • We deal with the physical, emotional, and progressive damage that alcohol and/or drug abuse causes not only to ourselves but also to our families and close friends.
  • We also have support workers available to help clients with things like Housing Benefits and DSS problems.
  • The Group consists of a 2 hour session that includes videos and/or lectures by the counselling staff and co-workers. After the group session there is then an opportunity, over coffee, for the clients to discuss any other problems that they may have.
  • To access this group all clients are initially assessed, on referral, to ascertain the exact nature of their problem, and their suitability for this part of the programme.
  • This is not an abstinence-based group but clients are encouraged towards that goal where appropriate.

The topics covered in Phase 1 include:

Week 1 An Introduction to the Agency
Week 2 Alcohol use and abuse
Week 3 Drugs awareness
Week 4 The Disease Concept
Week 5 The progression of the illness
Week 6 The physical effects of Alcohol addiction
Week 7 The physical effects of Marijuana addiction
Week 8 Blocks to recovery
Week 9 Health awareness
Week 10 The effects of the family
Week 11 Step one

The Pre-Treatment groups are used to encourage a positive change in thinking and behaviour which in turn promotes a better and more fulfilling lifestyle
