TREATMENT: AFTERCARE

Aftercare is part of the Primary Care package and service users would have signed an initial contract stating they are prepared to attend the aftercare programme for at least a year with an option of a second year. It is open to anyone who has fully completed the first five steps of a Twelve-step programme, whether that is a service user who completed with WGCADA or any other organisation. We are currently receiving many referrals from residential units due to the fact that often people have to travel long distances back to the unit, and access to our agency is much more convenient.

Aftercare involves a monthly group therapy session, which differs from Primary care as they are used for dealing with situations that people are finding difficult at the present time. Subjects often include relationships, employment and poor health. This group has no maximum figure although we would probably not run a group with more than twelve service users.

One to one support is usually given on a six weekly basis, but more are given if the need arises. Often people find adjustment to life without treatment difficult so more regular sessions are given. This is particularly true of service users in the residential setting.

Steps 6 and 7 are dealt with during these sessions and any other issues that need addressing, maybe there was no time to cover everything needed in Primary Treatment or issues have reared their heads that haven't been a problem before.

We encourage people to deal with Steps 8 - 12 in the self- help groups to which they have by now, become accustomed to attending. By the end of the first year of Aftercare we have hopefully encouraged and directed people to become responsible for their own lives and this does have an effect on the numbers who are actively still participating by then, which are generally much lower.
