WGCADA TRAINING PROGRAMMES

WGCADA has been providing substance misuse services to the community since 1979. Originally founded on the twelve step abstinence model, it now offers services based on both abstinence and harm reduction.

Fee will be agreed on consultation.

Your course fee will be reimbursed if cancellation is made three weeks prior to the course date.

 

Level 1 Substance Misuse Training

DANOS Standards: AA1, AA3, AB2, AC1, AF1

AIM
To provide participants with appropriate information about substance misuse

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course participants will :

  • Have a better understanding of why people take drugs
  • Have identified substances that are commonly misused and their effects.
  • Be aware of relevant legislation regarding substance misuse.
  • Be aware of local and national resources and how to access them.

Course length: One day

Maximum number: 20

 

Level 2 Substance Misuse Training

DANOS Standards AA1, AA3, AB2, AC1, AF2, AF2

AIM To provide participants with more in-depth knowledge around substance misuse interventions.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course participants will:

  • Have an understanding of why people take drugs, how people take drugs, and / or drugs that are misused.
  • Have an understanding of both national and local frameworks.
  • Have an appreciation of both harm reduction and abstinence interventions.
  • Have had an opportunity to explore inter-personal skills required to work with this client group.
  • Have the knowledge and skills to undertake a basic substance misuse assessment.
  • Have an understanding of specialist and non-specialist agencies, and effective partnership working

Course length: Two days

Level 2 Substance Misuse & Parenting

DANOS Standards AA1, AA2, AA3, AB2, AB4, AB7, AC1, AF1

AIM
To enable participants to explore the relationship between substance misuse and parenting

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course participants will:

Have a better understanding of why people take substances.

  • Understand how different drugs affect people.
  • Have considered what is “safer drug use”.
  • Have improved awareness of when a child is “at risk”, due to the parent’s misuse of alcohol or drugs.
  • Have an increased knowledge of specialist agencies.

Course length: One day

Level 2 Alcohol and the Elderly

DANOS Standards AA1, AA2, AA3, AB2, AC1, AF1

AIM
To enable participants to explore the relationship between alcohol and older people.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the day participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role alcohol can play in older peoples’ lives
  • List some typical problems related to drinking for older people.
  • Describe how and where to refer people whose drinking is causing problems.

Course length: One Day

Level 2 Alcohol Awareness Training

DANOS Standards AA1, AA2, AA3, AB2, AC1, AF1

AIM
To provide participants with information about alcohol and its affects.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course participants will:

  • Will have in increased awareness of the issues surrounding alcohol misuse.
  • Understand some of the consequences of alcohol use, alcohol dependence, relapse and withdrawal.
  • Have increased confidence in dealing with alcohol related issues and incidents.
  • Have more knowledge of the help available locally for people with alcohol problems and how to access services.

Course length: One Day

Maximum number: 20

 

Ten Week Volunteer Training Programme

This course is organised to run twice annually and is designed to give volunteers all the underpinning knowledge they need to work in any of our five agencies.

There are ten half day sessions spread over ten consecutive weeks.

The minimum attendance is 70% as this training is a compulsory requirement of our agency ensuring best quality service to our clients.

  • Working With Difference
  • Skills For Dealing With Conflict

On completion of the course and before volunteers are offered a placement each person is subject to a CRB disclosure.
