The Peer Mentoring Project

The Peer Mentoring Scheme is a Wales wide initiative funded by the Welsh European Funding Office and sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government. WGCADA will be running the project across Swansea, Bridgend Neath and Port Talbot and mentoring teams have now been established in each of these areas. The teams are enthusiastic and excited about this new project and are looking forward to working in partnership with agencies offering additional support to our clients.

Mentoring can be defined as a 'one-to-one, non-judgemental relationship in which an individual, the mentor, gives time to support and encourage another.' This innovative project recognises people's need for having somebody there for them as they develop skills and gain the confidence to become independent and lead fulfilled lives.

The mentors will work with anyone who has been affected by substance misuse including family members and will provide support, advice and guidance to guide them into education, training, volunteering and employment. Having a mentor can help people to stay focused and can provide a helping hand in times of need.

As the project develops we will be looking at volunteering opportunities, social enterprises and ways of gaining employability skills. We will be encouraging service user involvement and making sure that the project meets the needs of our clients. Mentors have been out meeting training providers in their areas and have been busy building links so that we have a wealth of potential courses and volunteering opportunities for any individuals being mentored.
