The aim of this post is to reduce drug related crime, particularly
where domestic violence or the fear of such violence results from
drug misuse. This is a major problem:
- It is estimated that one in four women have experienced domestic
violence at some stage of their lives.
- Every week, two women are killed by their current or former
partners.
- Domestic violence accounts for 23% of all violent crime in this
country.
- Research from the Neath & Port Talbot Police Domestic Violence
Unit records that in 29% of victims and 48% of perpetrators, alcohol/drug
abuse was an aggravating factor
This post offers a treatment programme for service users who are
presently under- represented. Such service users have been identified
as:
- Victims of domestic violence as a result of drug misusing behaviour
- Women offenders whose offences are drug related
- Offenders (or those at risk of future offending) requiring a
speciality intervention e.g. Assertiveness Training, 12 Step Abstinence
Counselling, Harm Reduction Counselling. These services are offered
both on a one to one and group basis.
- Family members who have been affected by someone else's drug
using behaviour and the incidence of domestic violence.
Regular meetings with other agencies in this field are essential
for an effective service to be provided for clients. To this end,
WGCADA is represented at the Domestic Violence Forum and serves
on the Communities First Steering Committee. WGCADA is also represented
at monthly MARAC meetings held at Port Talbot Police Station in
order to offer a service to both victims and perpetrators with substance
misuse problems.
Visits are made to Women's Aid, Cymdeithas Tai Hafan and the Neath
& Port Talbot Domestic Violence Unit. This service is available
at the WGCADA premises in both Neath and Port Talbot. An outreach
service is also available for those who cannot access us due to
mobility/financial problems or where personal safety might be jeopardised.
