Counselling Assessment Referral Advice and Throughcare
Available at and in Partnership with the Probation Service and
H.M. Prison establishments in Cardiff, Parc (Bridgend), Swansea
and Usk/Prescoed
About the Scheme
Focussed at the point of entry to the Prison System but also available
throughout the sentence term for individual prisoners who wish to
address drug and alcohol related problems. The scheme provides an
initial assessment that leads to a Care Plan that helps Prisoners
access all interventions and treatment programmes available to them
in the Prison system.
The same individual Care Plan will follow prisoners throughout
their sentence and can be part of a larger Sentence Planning option
that will also provide a link between the Prison Service initiatives
and Community Treatment options near the time of release. CARAT
also helps to educate prisoners in health, relapse prevention and
general drug awareness matters.
Who is the scheme suitable for?
The scheme is funded to provide a service to prisoners over 18 years
of age who want to address substance misuse issues related to their
offending past or present. It is the entry point for all prisoners
to additional drug and alcohol programmes available in the Prison
System as well as being the sole service many prisoners will access
during their sentence.
Support Services
The CARAT scheme provides for sentenced drug and alcohol users access
to healthcare and detoxification services within the prison system
as well as other specific treatment and behavioural interventions
during the term of their sentence. It is also the gateway to accessing
Community Services prior to release and at the end of sentence.
The service can also in appropriate circumstances provide individual
counselling and family intervention for those within the Prison
system.
Assess to the Scheme can be made by any sentenced prisoner at any
time during their sentence or whilst on remand.
For more information contact any of WGCADA's
offices and they will help you access the CARAT workers at individual
Prison Establishments.
