WGCADA Bridgend Harm Reduction Case Study

History / Background

Anne is a 48-year-old female who was referred to West Glamorgan Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (WGCADA) agency in Bridgend by her Probation Officer on 16th May 2003. Anne was offered an initial assessment appointment on 29th May 2003. During the assessment appointment, Anne was identified as using Amphetamine as her main drug. She had been using amphetamine for the past eight years primarily to lose weight, but was currently using it to aid her with staying awake in order to attend to her partner. There was also a history of previous IV use. Anne was also taking prescribed medication and had also had a history of domestic violence issues.

Care Plan

Prior to the assessment, Anne had began to reduce her amphetamine intake, however a referral was undertaken with Anne's consent to the Community Drug and Alcohol Team (CDAT) because of her physical health. Anne was also offered 1-1 support on a weekly basis as it was felt at this time that she was too anxious to contemplate any group activity. During the assessment process it became apparent that Anne showed a high level of motivation and commitment to reducing her amphetamine intake and making appropriate changes to her life style, primarily with regard to the domestic violence issues.

1-1 support has been constant since Anne was referred to the agency. There has been regular contact between all agencies involved with the client. Towards the end of 2003, Anne's appointments went from weekly appointments to fortnightly ones. This was in agreement with all parties that participate in the Anne's care plan.

Outcome

Anne's Probation order is currently still running with the prospect of the client participating in the Women's group in the near future. During a recent review with Anne, Probation Officer, and myself it was decided that appointments with Probation were going to reduce to monthly intervals. However, Anne decided that she would like fortnightly appointments to continue with WGCADA. This has been agreed to and a further review arranged for May 2004. Through Anne's choice, CDAT support has been withdrawn.

Anne has succeeded in achieving a degree of stability since the initial assessment. Her illicit drug use, although not ended, has become significantly reduced. Anne is also on her way to achieving other goals that were identified during her assessments and continuing 1-1 sessions. Anne contacted estranged family members and began to re-build these relationships, which is having a positive and encouraging influence in her life at this time.

Conclusion

Anne continues to attend her appointments and is currently sustaining the positive changes that she has made over the last year.
