Cash boost helps give rehab centre much needed new look

A successful Port Talbot addiction rehab centre has received a much needed makeover. The Emroch House home of West Glamorgan Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (WGCADA), in Talbot Road has now become a more pleasant setting for clients following a £470,000 redevelopment.

The funding has enabled the centre to move its main operations from its site in Commercial Road, Taibach, which will now be redeveloped into an alcohol and substance misuse centre.

 A leading light in Swansea’s fight against alcoholism has died aged 78. Former soldier Alan Douglas who was a founding father of the West Glamorgan Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse spent most of his active service in Germany guarding prisoners of war.

Older people can find help for addictions

A man of 93 is the oldest person to have been helped by a service which weans people of drug and alcohol abuse in Neath Port Talbot.

West Glamorgan Council for Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Victoria Gardens, Neath operates a unique programme to help those aged 55 and over.

This week Deputy Health Minister John Griffiths visited the scheme. Older person’s workers Anne Craven and Carolyn Foley visit the elderly in their homes and provide advice and support for a generation that is often forgotten.

Addicts given life-saving courses

Drug users in South Wales are being given life saving training in an attempt to reduce deaths from overdoses.

In the first project of its kind in Wales, addicts and the professionals they come into contact with are being taught techniques including heart massage.

Four courses are taking place in Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend on Wednesday and Friday. They are a direct result of a conference held at Port Talbot’s Princess Royal Theatre earlier this month, which was attended by more than 200 people involved in the drug treatment field.
