Ex-drink victim's top job

Western Mail, Friday January 27 1984

A man whose life was nearly ruined by drink has won a top post in a new alcoholics-aid organisation.

Mr Alan Douglas, aged 5, a full-time worker at the Swansea Alcohol Advice Centre, has been appointed Welsh representative of Alcohol Concern, a new body set up to co-ordinate help for alcoholism victims.

Former Customs officer Mr Douglas said that 17 years ago he was on the point of losing his job and wife because of drink.

"Through the help of volunteer workers I managed to get over the addiction and from then on I decided to help people who suffered the same problem I did." he said.
