Abuse fighters praised by AM

South Wales Evening Post Monday July 2 2001

West Glamorgan Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse has been praised for its work by South West Wales AM Peter Black.

Mr Black visited the council's Swansea base in St James Crescent and its neighbouring base in Neath, where nearly 1,000 clients were assessed last year.

After his visit, Mr Black called on the Assembly to ensure that the project and others dealing with substance misuse were not hampered by funding problems.

He said: "This agency does fantastic work in helping those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The facilities in Swansea are well-used and provide a good environment for counselling and group work".

"Although this agency has been able to he a large number of people there is a great deal more that needs to be done.

"The Assembly needs to get a clear focus on its work on substance misuse and make sure that as much funding earmarked for this work as possible gets into the frontline services.

"I have written to Assembly Minister Jane Hutt to ask have for a meeting to discuss these matters further."
